Nursing Home Shakes Recalled Over Listeria Contamination: What Georgia Families Need to Know

Do You have a Family Member Residing in a Nursing Home Who was Diagnosed with Listeria?

A recent listeria outbreak linked to frozen supplemental shakes distributed in long-term care facilities across the United States has resulted in 12 deaths and 37 hospitalizations. At Dermer Appel Ruder, LLC, our Georgia personal injury attorneys are committed to holding negligent companies accountable for selling contaminated products that endanger vulnerable populations.

Understanding the Listeria Outbreak

On February 22, 2025, Lyons Magnus issued a recall for 4 oz. Lyons ReadyCare and Sysco Imperial Frozen Supplemental Shakes, manufactured by Prairie Farms Dairy, Inc., due to potential listeria contamination. These products were distributed exclusively to long-term care facilities and hospitals, making elderly residents and immunocompromised patients particularly vulnerable to infection.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), this outbreak dates back to 2018, with 38 confirmed cases in 21 states. In 2024 and 2025 alone, 20 new cases have been reported. The vast majority of affected individuals—34 out of 38—resided in nursing homes or hospitals, where the contaminated shakes were available.

Listeria

What is Listeria and Who is at Risk?

Listeria is a type of bacteria that can contaminate food and cause severe illness or death, particularly in:

  • Adults over 65.
  • Pregnant women and newborns.
  • Individuals with weakened immune systems.

Listeria infections can lead to fever, muscle aches, gastrointestinal distress, confusion, convulsions, and even life-threatening complications such as sepsis or meningitis.

Holding Negligent Companies Accountable

This tragic outbreak raises serious concerns about food safety in long-term care facilities. Manufacturers and distributors of nutritional products have a duty to ensure their products are free from harmful bacteria. When they fail to uphold these safety standards, the consequences can be deadly.

At Dermer Appel Ruder, LLC, our Georgia personal injury attorneys are dedicated to seeking justice for victims of contaminated food products. We help families pursue wrongful death and personal injury claims against corporations responsible for foodborne illness outbreaks.

If your loved one became ill or passed away due to listeria contamination in a Georgia nursing home or hospital, you may be entitled to compensation for medical expenses, pain and suffering, and loss of companionship. Our legal team is here to investigate your case, gather evidence, and hold negligent parties accountable.
