Defining Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBIs)

A TBI describes any disruption to the brain’s normal function because of a bump or jolt to the head. A penetrating brain injury, such as a gunshot wound, could also cause a TBI. Traumatic brain injuries differ from acquired brain injuries (ABIs) in that they stem from outside sources. In contrast, ABIs occur when something internal goes wrong with the brain, such as deadly lack of oxygen or a hematoma (bleeding in the brain). TBIs often arise from preventable accidents, such as vehicle collisions and falls.

Traumatic brain injuries can have lasting impacts on survivors. They can cause a wide variety of physical and cognitive problems, including motor skill impairment, difficulty speaking, confusion, and memory loss. Many TBI survivors will never return to their previous health conditions. Permanent disabilities from TBIs can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars over the victim’s lifetime. It’s up to the victim to speak to a personal injury attorney about potential financial recovery from an at-fault party.

Types of TBIs

Every TBI is unique. However, the classifications of traumatic brain injuries remain the same. The most common TBI is a concussion. Concussions are minor brain injuries that can happen from blows to the head, shaking, or rapid movement (e.g., whiplash). Other types of TBIs are:

  • Contusion. The bruising of the brain tissue.
  • Penetrating injury. An outside object penetrates the skull and enters the brain.
  • Anoxic brain injury. Oxygen deprivation to the brain.
  • Coup-contrecoup brain injury. Damage to the side of the brain opposite of the injury.
  • Diffuse axonal injury. An extreme violent movement that tears the brain stem.

Absolutely all TBIs are serious and require immediate medical attention. Never delay going to the hospital after suffering any type of accident that affects your head or brain. Prompt medical care can mean the difference between a successful recovery and a permanent brain injury. Even if you don’t feel injured, go to the hospital for a checkup. You could have a brain injury with hidden or delayed symptoms.

Causes of TBIs

Many different types of personal injury accidents can cause traumatic brain injuries. The most common according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, however, are falls (47%), struck-by object (15%), and auto accidents (14%). Violent crimes such as physical assault also commonly cause TBIs, as do sports and recreation incidents (e.g., a baseball striking the head or a rough tackle in football). Recognizing the common causes of TBIs can help you act to prevent and avoid them. Sometimes, however, it’s impossible to prevent someone else’s negligence. In these cases, it’s important to contact a brain injury lawyer to hold the responsible accountable.
