Experience a Rideshare Accident Injury? Your Next Steps are Critical

It was a great day. The sky was blue, the birds were chirping, and my presentation was excellent!  It was very well received, and they were already asking when I could begin the work.  Of course, this was just the beginning, but a great start to what will hopefully be a prosperous engagement for all involved.  My little company had received a new client last month, and if this deal went through, it would be our second big hit this month. I think this is going to be a great week, month, year! I left my next new client’s offices and settled in at the coffee shop across the street to get caught up on anything I may have missed in my morning meeting.

Emails, phone calls, and a great cappuccino later, I was ready to head back to our office in Gwinnett. I check both Uber and Lyft to see who had a service car in the area before hitting the button on a shared ride that was only a few minutes away.

There was a young man in the back seat when I entered the silver Toyota Camry sedan. Our driver, Jamal, had great reviews for a reason.  There were water bottles and mints available with relaxing music on his radio.  I settled in for what would be an approximately 20-minute ride if he avoided I285.

I was totally into a podcast, not paying any attention when I felt the first hit.  My body went forward, and the passenger seat was suddenly in my face. I was trying to adjust myself when I realized the car was spinning.  I braced myself just as the vehicle stopped on the grass embankment. I think we hit a sign or something. I looked at our driver, and his head seemed to be resting on the airbag.  It was then I realized I had just had a car accident with a rideshare driver.

There were two other cars on the side of the road with us.  One driver was fussing about something he was going to miss. The other was talking on a cellphone.  Our Uber driver exited the vehicle and stood taking in the scene.  My fellow passenger was already out of the car.  I realized my face is bleeding, and blood is dripping onto my shirt. This is not how I expected to end my great day.  As police arrived, along with paramedics, I found a few tissues and kept pressure on my forehead. A passing paramedic suggested that I might need stitches. I looked for my personal automotive insurance card and tried to read the small print. Will my insurance cover my injuries?  How would that even work?  Does the Uber driver’s insurance help with any expenses that I incur because of the accident? Does Uber have insurance on their drivers?

I asked all drivers if I could have their names, contact information, and insurance information.  I asked the police officer if I would be allowed to get a police report as a passenger.  I contacted my brother, who lives nearby, and asked if he could come and pick me up.  I took pictures of the cars right before tow trucks arrived.  My brother finally got close enough for me to walk down the road to his car.  Now, what do I do?
